| 1 Child Author: Cheng, Christopher Woolman, Steven (Illustrator) ISBN: 1-56656-330-5 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Hardcover Crocodile Books
From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1-This book reads more like a
tract than a story. Throughout the first three double-page spreads, a dispirited
girl stares at a television screen with her stuffed animals scattered around
her. The entirely blue pictures reflect the gloomy news of forest destruction,
ocean pollution, and animal exploitation. Then an epiphany occurs, and the
youngster takes action to reverse ecological disaster. Planting a tree, walking
to school, and writing letters brighten segments of the gray and dying world
around her. As other children take similar measures, the pages brighten. Hope
and ecological health revive. The quasi-religious tone is reinforced by
illustrations that recall stained-glass windows. More meditation than story,
this title lacks child appeal, even for those who get past the first gloomy
pages. Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato Copyright 2000 Reed
Business Information, Inc. From Kirkus Reviews Disheartened by environmental
destruction, a girl determines to do all she can to reverse the process in
Cheng's optimistic invitation to personal action. The girl plants a tree, walks
to school instead of riding, cleans up the yard, writes, sings, marches, and
speaks for the world, then imagines, in an affecting final series of
illustrations, what would happen ``if the children of the world did all that
they could.'' Woolman bases his ink-and-colored-pencil illustrations on the
metaphor of the gradual cleaning of a stained-glass window; his early images are
blue and gloomy, but frame by frame, a glistening world emerges. His depiction
of the brilliance achieved aids the simple, restrained text enormously, as he
adds the layers needed for making the text specific. (Picture book. 3-6) --

Paperback Parentmagic, Inc.
From Booklist Previously available as a booklet in conjunction with a
workshop and as a video, clinical psychologist Phelan's simple, effective
child-management program has now been issued as a trade paperback. The gist of
the plan is to enable parents to discipline children, ages 2 to 12, by
instituting a system of counting and time-outs, delivered straightforwardly and
unemotionally. How the regimen is used to stop undesirable behavior, stimulate
desirable conduct, and cope with children's testing is conveyed in Phelan's
candid style, filled with common sense, concrete examples, and lots of
reassuring humor. Time-and parent-tested, the methods are applied in
identifiable situations (pouting, bedtime, dressing) as well in the all-too
familiar incidences of children testing and manipulating their elders. Best of
all, the method enables parents to control their kids without yelling . . . or
worse. In addition, Phelan covers homework, active listening, self-esteem,
behavior in public, and the use of his method in schools. An excellent,
workable, and supportive resource for parents and educators. Irene Wood --This

effective discipline choices to be used on children ages 1-12. From handling

this covers everything from home to public behavior, providing parents with

Jan Nisbet, Director, Institute on Disability, Univ. of New Hampshire This is
an extraordinary plain language guide to inclusion. Nominally it is about
education, globally it is a guide to building inclusive communities of living.
It's not a tool -- it's a way. John McKnight, Northwestern University. People
call me every day asking for assistance in including children with challenges
into regular schools and classrooms. I can think of no better resource or
information than this book. Finally, I can give people information that is
clear, concise, and represents years of experience and thought. Book Description
This 55 page book is definitely the best seller of Inclusion Press. It is now in
its 4th printing. It is short and jargon free and describes in detail the Circle
of Friends exercise and the MAPS (Making Action Plans) process. We strongly
recommend it with the Video With A Little Help From My Friends and the New MAPS
Training Video. This book is being used by school systems all around the globe.
It is perfect for conferences and courses as it is short and filled with actual
tips on how to develop an action plan (MAP) for including any child at risk of
exclusion. It is not limited to any one label but for all children at risk at
any age. Although it talks mostly about elementary and middle school age
children we feel it is transferable to high school students and adults. A
perfect handout for large conferences and a text for courses. Audience: Mostly
school personnel and parents of children in school.

Board book Little Simon
From School Library Journal PreS Each of these board books consists of four
double-page illustrations with a brief rhyming action verse. Chubby little
toddlers engaged in a variety of activities spill off the pages in lively
arrangements. Close-up views show multi-ethnic babies playing, bathing, eating,
swinging, sleeping, etc. The watercolors, in bright pastels with pencil outline,
are clear and appealing on a white background. The primary disadvantage of this
set is the oversize format (8 square). Tots will find these books hard to hold
in their hands, and turning the pages will be frustrating. Older preschoolers
who could manipulate the pages will find little story or plot to hold their
interest. However, with an adult or older child turning the pages, these books
will be enjoyed by the intended audience. Nancy Kewish, Cuyahoga County Public

Hardcover Villard
To criticize these random jottings, some of which have appeared in "Dear
Abby" columns and Reader's Digest , is perhaps akin to suggesting that the
American flag be used as a rag in a carwash. Fulghum, a retired Unitarian
minister, does not express uncommon thoughts here: his thoughts are those we all
wish were true. The book's tone is set by the title piece, in which the author
sets out his credo, ranging from "share everything" to "hold hands and stick
together." He goes on to relate stories of a courageous and loving Russian
soldier and Mother Teresa. Fulghum approaches each topic here with
lump-in-the-throat sentimentality, which is sure to feed the public's perceived
hunger for happy talk. First serial to Redbook; BOMC featured selection.
Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. Unitarian minister Fulghum has
become something of a celebrity since a talk he gave at a primary school
graduation ("Share everything. Play fair. . . . LOOK.") generated such interest
that it ultimately found its way into "Dear Abby." Here is more of his
philosophyalways go with dreams, imagination, hope, laughter, and
loveaccompanied by random musings on dandelions, medicine cabinets, and the
vices of excessive tidiness, which are quirky and often thought-provoking.
Undergirded by his love for family and (loosely understood) for God, this makes
refreshing reading. EC

From Publishers Weekly In 1982 the beleaguered Kinzie elementary school,
suffering from typical inner-city deprivations in southeast Chicago, was
revitalized with the addition of 15 classes of deaf and hard-of-hearing
children. At first the non-hearing population was segregated from the hearing,
which resulted in envy from both camps over the special treatments each
perceived the other to receive. In telling of how conflict turned into
cooperation, and, ultimately, integration, Banks, the principal of Kinzie, draws
a blueprint for how special education should--yet seldom does--serve students.

From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 2-Set in the Appalachian
Mountains during the early 20th century, this pleasant story is told in a manner
that will appeal to children. In the quiet narrative, a young girl awaits the
arrival of a new sibling. The lyrical text reads like poetry: "Mama says an
angel is coming, coming clear up the mountain, riding clear up Lonesome Creek, a
tiny babe tucked in her saddlebag, a tiny babe tucked safe and warm."
Attractive, realistic acrylic paintings show the family's preparations as Pap
takes the handmade cradle out of storage and Mam washes tiny garments that once
belonged to the narrator. Glimpses of life in the hills include a quilting bee
with all of the aunties and storytelling by the fireplace. In the end, though
she hoped for a sister, the girl readily accepts her little brother, declaring,
"Can't help but love him just the same." An appended author's note gives a brief
history of Mary Breckinridge and the Frontier Nursing Service, describing the
nurse-midwives who traveled into rugged terrain to serve families that otherwise
went untended. It also explains that many young Kentuckians believed that babies
arrived in the saddlebag of one of these "angel[s] on horseback." An engaging
piece of historical fiction.-Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI

mountainside house with her father and pregnant mother, a little girl awaits the
arrival of an angel on horseback with "a tiny babe tucked in her saddlebag."
Time passes. The family gets out the old cradle, washes little clothes, and
hosts a quilting bee. One morning, the girl climbs the mountain and returns to
find a tall lady standing with her horse outside the cabin. Inside, Mama lies in
bed, holding the new baby. The appended author's note explains that beginning in
1925, the Frontier Nursing Service began training and sending nurses to remote
cabins in the mountains to check on the families, treat their ailments, and
occasionally, if the timing was right, help with the birth of a child. Children
were sometimes told that the babies were brought by angels on horseback. From
mentions of creek sounds, darting birds, and "old-time ways" to the gentle
curves and soft colors of the landscape, both story and art evoke the beauty of
the Appalachian setting. Gaber's acrylic paintings portray the characters and
their surroundings with finesse. Written in the first person from the girl's
point of view, the text is unrhymed, but its cadence has the grace of speech and
the meter of song. A quiet, memorable picture book. Carolyn Phelan Copyright ©

| Anno's Counting Book Author: Anno, Mitsumasa (Illustrator) ISBN: 0-06-443123-1 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback HarperTrophy
Amazon.com What kind of a counting book is this? On the first page all we see
is a barren winter landscape--a hazy, blue sky above a hazy, white hill. Nothing
to count here. But wait, this is zero! On the next page the scene brightens: one
tree, one bird, one house. Turn the page again and the snow has started to
melt--we find two buildings, two trucks, two trees, two children, two dogs, and
two adults. Suddenly there is almost more than we can count on each page! The
objects in the beautiful watercolor pictures correspond with each consecutive
number, and in addition (so to speak), the number of items on the page increases
exponentially. Mitsumasa Anno, author and illustrator of the award-winning
Anno's Journey, has crafted a lovely medium to help kids learn to count. His
love for numbers is reflected in the symmetry of every page, as well as his
respect for the mathematical relationships that occur all around us. What kind
of a counting book is this? The graceful, intelligent, engaging kind. (Ages 4 to
8) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. -- The New York Times "One of
the few truly intelligent counting books ever produced-and a work of art

How do the arts stack up as a major discipline? What is their effect on the
brain, learning, and human development? How might schools best implement and
assess an arts program?? Eric Jensen answers these questions C and more C in
this book. To push for higher standards of learning, many policymakers are
eliminating arts programs. To Jensen, that's a mistake. This book presents the
definitive case, based on what we know about the brain and learning, for making
arts a core part of the basic curriculum and thoughtfully integrating them into
every subject. Separate chapters address musical, visual, and kinesthetic arts
in ways that reveal their influence on learning. What are the effects of a fully
implemented arts program? The evidence points to the following: $ Fewer dropouts
$ Higher attendance $ Better team players $ An increased love of learning $
Greater student dignity $ Enhanced creativity $ A more prepared citizen for the
workplace of tomorrow $ Greater cultural awareness as a bonus To Jensen, it's
not a matter of choosing, say, the musical arts over the kinesthetic. Rather,
ask what kind of art makes sense for what purposes. How much time per day? What
kind of music? Should the arts be required? How do we assess arts programs? In
answering these real-world questions, Jensen provides dozens of practical,
detailed suggestions for incorporating the arts into every classroom.

in the Behavioral Sciences Author: Kupfersmid, Joel Wonderly, Donald M. ISBN: 0-88422-123-7 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback Clinical Psychology Pub Co
designed to assist professionals and graduate students who desire to have
their manuscripts published in the most appropriate and most prestigious
journals. The text summarizes the current dissatisfaction expressed by many with
the journal publication system. Concrete suggestions on how the situation can be
improved are presented. Guidelines are offered on methods for selecting
significant research problems with recommendations for meaningful statistical
analyses. Empirical and quasi-empirical studies on the journal publication
system are provided, which focus on the peer review process and on biases
inherent in the determination of which manuscripts are selected for publication.
Recommendations are offered as to how problems associated with these issues may
be ameliorated. A variety of lists of high-status behavioral science journals by
specialty area is included, with suggestions on how an author can determine
which of these journals are likely to be interested in specific types of
manuscripts. This author's guide contains more than 200 references and could
well alter the way researchers view the journal publication process; it will
assist in improving the content and relevance of published articles, as well as
the manner in which data in the behavioral sciences are examined. Much of the
invaluable information will also serve in the selection and submission to
independent and speciality publishing houses as well. T

| Baby Dance (Harper Growing Tree (Board Books)) Author: Taylor, Ann Heerden, Marjorie van (Illustrator) ISBN: 0-694-01206-8 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Board book HarperFestival
From School Library Journal PreSchool-While Mama is napping on the sofa,
Father comforts his baby daughter and soon they are dancing and singing their
way through this action poem. The little girl's hair ribbons gleefully soar as
she goes "Up to the ceiling,/down to the ground/Backward, forward,/'round and
'round." Van Heerden's soft-focus artwork is animated and realistic. The red,
orange, and yellow background hues radiate with the warmth of this
African-American family, and the simple, catchy rhyme invites parent/child
participation. A great addition to board-book collections. Linda Ludke, London
Public Library, Ontario, Canada Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From Kirkus Reviews This abbreviated version of Taylor's poem,``The Baby
Dance,'' drawing upon infants' universal love of song, weaves a few bouncing
lines to make listeners wriggle. An African-American father croons to his baby
daughter while engaging in a spontaneous and steadily more exuberant dance.
``Dance, little baby,/move to and fro/Coo and crow, baby,/there you go.'' Van
Heerden's judicious use of background colors subtly reflect the increasing
tempo, as soothing blues gradually intensify into vibrant swirls of orange,
yellow, and purple. A boisterous romp. (Board book. 1-3) -- Copyright ©1998,

| Bear in a Square (Bear Series) Author: Blackstone, Stella Harter, Debbie (Illustrator) ISBN: 1-84148-120-3 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback Barefoot Books
From School Library Journal PreSchool-This very simple title teaches shapes
and counting. However, since the illustrations are clear and realistic and the
colors are true, it could be used for color and object identification as well.
Starting with a double-page spread of a building with three square windows and a
door, the text asks readers to find the bear in the square. A strip on the side
gives a clue as to which window is the correct one. The text on the next page
asks children to find the two hearts in the queen's hair, and the right-hand
strip shows the shape to search for. The book continues through 10 stars in the
dark. The shapes include simple ovals and stars but also zigzags, triangles, and
crescents. Specific numbers are not mentioned, but youngsters will realize that
the quantities of objects are increasing. Some of the illustrations are
whimsical such as moons in a cave but others are realistic with balls in a
swimming pool and rectangles in a classroom. Therefore, the presentation also
offers opportunities to talk about realism versus fantasy. An engaging, brightly
colored matching game for storytimes or for teaching concepts. Susan Lissim,
Dwight School, New York City Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Board book Scholastic Press
From School Library Journal PreS?This board-book series is based on the
concept that preschoolers will learn to "read" by turning the pages, looking at
the pictures and words, and singing the familiar songs that they have memorized.
In Bear, a cub leaves his mother to make the trek up the side of the mountain,
basket of flowers in hand. He looks around and returns to his mother's arms
after tumbling down the hill. In the final frame, he attempts the trip again. In
Itsy-Bitsy, a goose wanders near a drainpipe at the corner of a house and a
spider plops out of nowhere onto its beak. Filled with humor and warmth, Wells's
colorful illustrations bring new life to these favorite rhymes. Simple and short
with large print, these cozy books will be welcome additions.?Blair Christolon,

| A Big Quiet House: A Yiddish Folktale from Eastern
Europe Author: Forest, Heather Greenstein, Susan (Illustrator) ISBN: 0-87483-604-2 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback August House LittleFolk
From Publishers Weekly Forest revisits the popular Yiddish folktale that also
inspired Margot Zemach's classic It Could Always Be Worse (1976). A poor man who
longs for a "big quiet house" where his wife's snoring and his children's
giggling will not annoy him consults the wisest woman in the shtetl (most
versions cast a rabbi as the advice-giver). On successive visits, she instructs
him to bring first a chicken, then a goat, horse, cow, and a sheep inside his
house, which of course adds to the din. Finally, when she tells him to remove
the noisy animals, the man has a new appreciation for his relatively large and
quiet house. Forest hams up her telling with intermittent rhymes and refrains,
inviting audience participation with a number of animal noises, but she lacks
Zemach's canny wit and expert pacing. Greenstein enhances the story's historical
flavor by using watercolor and streaky white pencil on a black surface,
resulting in a pleasingly old-fashioned, woodcut-like appearance. Ages 4-7.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.--This text refers to an out of
print or unavailable edition of this title. From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-A flawed retelling of a familiar folktale. When a peasant
complains that his small hut is too crowded and noisy, an old woman (in
traditional versions, a wise man) tells him to bring first one animal, then
another, and then still more into the house. Finally, when the poor man is
driven to distraction by the crowd and the noise, she tells him to remove all
the animals. The peasant is then delighted to find that his once-crowded hut is
now roomy and filled only with the joyful sounds of his family. Forest's
narrative slips in and out of rhyme to the extent that the inconsistency becomes
annoying. Some of the couplets flow naturally, while some seem forced. The meter
is erratic as well. Greenstein's bright, colorful scratchboard illustrations add
a delightfully humorous tone to the piece, although the consistency of her
depiction of the small town will not bear close scrutiny. Collections that
already have Margot Zemach's It Could Always Be Worse (Farrar, 1990), Marilyn
Hirsh's Could Anything Be Worse? (Holiday, 1974; o.p.), or Joanna Cole's It's
Too Noisy! (HarperCollins, 1989) can pass on this one. Linda Greengrass, Bank

Paperback Kane Press
From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 2. These book/cassette packages
introduce phonics through simple rhyming stories. Barbara deRubertis, the
series' author, has been an elementary school teacher and librarian. Each story
builds on a single short vowel sound, giving beginning readers practice through
the repetition of sounds and familiar words. Story lines are silly and
inventive, and recall Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat for the building of rhythm
and rhyming words. The books' animal characters and full-color illustrations
will hold youngsters' attention. The read-along cassette features lively
narration, using more than one voice to dramatize each story. This helpful
series for emerging readers will engage their attention and be fun at the same
time. Marcia Brightman, Orange Elementary Schools, MA Copyright 1997 Reed

Gr 3-6-- The format, layout, and writing style of this instruction manual for
young writers takes a didactic, textbook approach to the creative process. Here
is a five-step plan (Pre-Writing, Drafting, Revision, Editing, and Publishing)
that, despite repeated exhortations such as ``Enjoy yourself!'' or ``Have fun
polishing!'' is laborious to follow and tedious to read. The tone, while seeking
to empower potential writers, tends toward condescension (``It is a time to be
very proud of yourself'') and overstatement. Included are enough lists of
materials, goals, steps, checklists, and forms to discourage even highly
motivated students, although teachers seeking a highly structured approach may
find it useful. Carol Benjamin's Writing for Kids (Crowell, 1985) and Marion
Dane Bauer's What's Your Story? (Clarion, 1992) offer inspiration and
instruction more simply and palatably.

epilepsy describe in their own words what they see and how they feel when
witnessing a seizure. The next section is written by people with epilepsy, who
examine what their lives are like. The last section, written by two nurse
specialists in epilepsy, gives practical advice on how to live safely with
epilepsy. An index guides readers to descriptions of specific seizure
manifestations and helps them find accounts of experiences similar to their own.

Paperback Puffin
From School Library Journal The first two pages of this book are almost
exciting. A boy narrator states he likes the contents of a special box at his
grandmother's house. Turn the page and there is a box of buttons--no words--just
buttons. Unfortunately, it's all downhill from there. The boy describes various
buttons, telling what he imagines and knows about them--that some came from
shoes or from his grandfather's pants. A brief history of buttons appears in the
back. A story about buttons just isn't much of a story, and the grocery-store
quality illustrations in dull, lifeless watercolors without detail or depth
don't help. Even the layout is sloppy. --Denise Krell, New York Public Library

From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 3-This classic folktale,
translated into Spanish, is a humorous account of an itinerant cap salesman who
awakens from a nap to find his wares have disappeared thanks to a boisterous
bunch of monkeys. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text

[Editor's Note: The following is a combined review with OWEN and IRENE, LA
VALIENTE (BRAVE IRENE).]--These Spanish translations of well-loved children's
books come complete with superbly produced audio counterparts. All the stories
offer appropriate background music with animated, ear-catching narrators, who
will add to any child's listening and reading pleasure, in addition to providing
excellent language instruction for younger learners. In IRENE, LA VALIENTE
(BRAVE IRENE) a raging snowstorm offers many challenges to young Irene as she
seeks to deliver a ball gown that her mother has just finished for the duchess.
Susan Rybin offers this translation with zest, clarity, and a light-hearted,
child-like quality. Her diction is precise and moderately paced so that the
Spanish learner or native speaker can follow with ease. Music and sound effects
punctuate this charming performance. In SE VENDEN GORRAS (CAPS FOR SALE) an
itinerant cap vendor wakes up from a nap to find his pile of caps has
disappeared from his head onto the heads of numerous monkeys chattering from the
tree above. This Reading Rainbow classic features music throughout, with an
enthusiastic performance by Angel Pineda. His pacing and attention to detail are
impeccable, including a superb rendition of an echoing voice moving down a
hillside as the cap seller continues on his way. The story of OWEN asks how
Owen's parents will help him relinquish his beloved blanket and silence Mrs.
Tweezers's constant chiding. This delightful tale unfolds with playful
background music and sound effects that underscore perfectly the many distinct
voices created by narrator Blanca Camacho. Her tone of voice is especially well
suited to the very young listener/reader. Each Live Oak Media and Weston Woods
Studio production includes a cassette with the entire story on each side. Side
One comes with instructions and page-turning signals; Side Two has no signals.
The Weston Woods cassettes are accompanied by durable hardback books while the
Live Oak's package includes high-quality paperbacks. Children, parents, and
teachers alike will treasure these enchanting read-alongs. J.J.F. © AudioFile

Book Description This charming book has been available for several years, but
it only now receiving the wide recognition it deserves. It is for younger
children (grades 1-4), and illustrates the way one young boy, reluctantly at
first, but with increased interest, becomes an important contributor to the life
of a fellow student with autism. Very popular with "normal" students. --This

Amazon.com It's Sunday after dark. Your baby is sick, hurt, or acting
strangely, and the doctor won't be in until tomorrow. How can you find out what
to do when your healthcare professionals are unreachable? You may only need to
go as far as your bookshelf. The revised edition of Caring for Your Baby and
Young Child: Birth to Age 5 (the American Academy of Pediatrics' reference book
for infancy through preschool), provides a wealth of authoritative child-care
information in an easy-to-use format. The first half of this hefty text serves
as a comprehensive parenting manual, and includes a month-by-month guide to the
first year, nutritional information, basic care instructions, and physical,
emotional, and social developmental milestones for children up to 5 years old.
While the American Academy of Pediatrics represents the mainstream child-rearing
philosophies embraced by thousands of baby doctors, it does not reflect the
entire gamut of child-rearing theory. (There's no discussion, for instance, of
breast-feeding past the first year or co-sleeping.) The second half of the book
includes a thorough, easy-to-navigate emergency first-aid section, plus detailed
information about childhood illnesses, immunization schedules and side effects,
and family structures, as well as a discussion of behavioral issues. Caring for
Your Baby and Young Child is useful, sensible, and carefully researched, and
makes a trustworthy addition to any parent's bookshelf. --Ericka Lutz --This
text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Publishers Weekly The first in a
projected trilogy of books that will lead parents from their offspring's
babyhood through the teen years, this is a thorough guide to infancy and the
first years of a child's life. It's the closest one can get to having a live-in
pediatrician. Part One explores the bond between parent and child, then launches
into a discussion of pregnancy, delivery and the care of newborn babies.
Subsequent chapters cover the first year of life, addressing typical physical
and mental developments, how parents can foster independence in children, and
common health problems. Major milestones for ages two through five are also
explored. Part Two is concerned with child safety, typical child care and how to
handle such complex issues as adoption, sibling rivalry and divorce. Individual
chapters devoted to eyes, heart, skin and more provide a handy reference tool
for spotting potential problems and coping with existing ones. Whether a child
is two months or two years old, the up-to-date information offered here will
reassure. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to

Hardcover Greenwillow
Los Angeles Times A Chair for My Mother was a Caldecott Honor book. Author/
illustrator Vera B. Williams tells of a young girl who, along with her waitress
mother, saves coins in a jar. They want to buy a big, new, comfortable chair for
their apartment, after losing all their furniture in a fire. A story of love and
caring, accented with full-color illustrations with a pleasant, almost primitive
quality.--This text refers to the Paperback edition. Booklist, 11/82 A young
girl tells how she, her mother, and her grandmother save up all of their spare
coins in a big glass jar toward the day when they will buy a much-needed easy
chair. (Their old furniture and their possessions were destroyed in a fire.) If
the plot is scant-after the jar fills up, mother, daughter, and grandmother buy
the chair and bring it home-the atmosphere of anticipation and family warmth is
strong. Williams' illustrations are energetic watercolor paintings brimming with
color and a cozy, indulgent expressionism. Intense roses, blues, yellows, and
greens vie for attention in the pictures' blocky compositions, where natty
patterning adds extra spice. A striking, offbeat backdrop for a loving
story.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

| Cherry Tree Author: Bond, Ruskin Eitzen, Allan (Illustrator) ISBN: 1-878093-21-5 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
School & Library Binding Boyds Mills Pr
From Publishers Weekly First published in Highlights , this gentle story of a
girl in Northern India who grows a cherry tree from seed abounds with quiet
wisdom and love of life. Bond's warm text is sympathetic to Rakhi's hopes and
fears as she tends her tree, and poetic in its rendering--"Come back when you're
a butterfly" she says to a hungry caterpillar. Time passes, the tree grows until
it produces flowers and fruit, and the girl becomes a woman. Eitzen's
atmospheric artwork eloquently portrays the unusual setting, while his choices
of moments and details are often singular: the wheels of a runaway cart skim
across a page; strange creatures whirl out of Grandfather's nighttime tales. A
minor cavil: the last page seems tacked on; the penultimate spread in itself
makes a more touching closure--contemplating her full-blown tree, " 'How it
changed,' she said. 'Just like you,' smiled Grandfather." Appealingly simple in
its treatment of faith, this beguiling picture book may well produce many young
arborists. Ages 4-8. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

| Children Do, Grownups Don't Author: Simon, Norma ISBN: 0-8075-1144-7 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
School & Library Binding Albert Whitman & Co
PreSchool-K Through broad generalizations about activities, likes, dislikes,
and appear ances, children and adults are contrasted. When the comparisons focus
on physical attributes, the book is mildly successful: ``Children lose their
teeth and grow bigger new ones. Grownups don't grow new teeth.'' However, when
the comparisons switch to personal taste, too many inaccu rate and stereotypical
statements mar the text. To say that ``Kids like to play out doors, even on
drizzly days'' while ``Grow nups would rather stay inside and be clean and warm
and dry'' is simply is not true of all childrennor of all adults. Nor is it con
ceivably true of all adults or children that ``Grownups like getting shirts and
socks for presents. Not kidsthey like toys. '' The illustrations of multi-ethnic
families are at tractive as portraits, but they are static and do not infuse the
book with the life it needs. This is the type of book that encourages
stereotypes and certainly discourages any sense of individuality or enthusiasm
about growing up. Trev Jones, ``School Library Journal Copyright 1988 Reed

Hardcover Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers
Kindergarten-Grade 5?In this companion volume to Alphabet City (Viking,
1995), Johnson's photo-realistic paintings show the numbers from 1 to 21 in city
details. Since these are paintings, the artist is able to tweak the scenes a
bit; the number two is made by flakes of peeling paint, for example. Sometimes
the numerals are hard to discern, as in the case of the 10, made of wavery
reflections in a glass building, or the 21, created from lighted windows in a
skyscraper. Tana Hoban's Count and See (Macmillan, 1972) has black-and-white
photos of city scenes, but shows numbers of objects rather than numerals, as
here. Bruce McMillan's Fire Engine Shapes (Lothrop, 1988; o.p.) provides shapes
rather than numerals to discover, but uses color photographs of a subject with
proven child appeal, as well as including children in his illustrations.
Johnson's images are fascinating and make this book interesting to older
children.?Pam Gosner, formerly at Maplewood Memorial Library, NJ Copyright 1999
Reed Business Information, Inc. From Kirkus Reviews In this wordless companion
to Alphabet City (1995), Johnson joins the likes of Tana Hoban, Arlene Alda, and
Donald Crews in his attraction to the numbers, letters, shapes, and compositions
found in the architecture and infrastructures of outdoor places and public
spaces. Paintings show numerals 121 that are camouflaged by the urban cityscapes
in which they exist. Discovering each number is an exercise in visual literacy:
4 is found in the lines of the Manhattan Bridge at sunset, 8 is formed by the
round rims of adjoining trash bins, a 15 hides in the cracked mortar between
bricks. Some numbers occur in the lines, curves, and curlicues of existing
architecture, such as an iron gate, a fire escape, a cornice; others are created
by negative space, for example, between stones on a snowy walkway or in the
scraped surface and papery patches of a building's peeling paint. The subjects
are similar to those found in the first book, although the colors, this time,
are wintry and more somber. Children will relish the game of locating numbers,
while adults will pause over Johnson's deliberate use of shape and color to
influence mood. (Picture book. 4-10) -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP.

| Click, clack, moo: Cows that type Author: Cronin, Doreen ISBN: 0-439-21648-6 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback Scholastic
Amazon.com The literacy rate in Farmer Brown's barn goes up considerably once
his cows find an old typewriter and begin typing. To the harassed farmer's
dismay, his communicative cows quickly become contentious: Dear Farmer Brown,
The barn is very cold at night. We'd like some electric blankets. Sincerely, The
Cows When he refuses to comply with their demands, the cows take action. Farmer
Brown finds another note on the barn door: "Sorry. We're closed. No milk today."
Soon the striking cows and Farmer Brown are forced to reach a mutually agreeable
compromise, with the help of an impartial party--the duck. But this poor,
beleaguered farmer's "atypical" troubles are not over yet! This hilarious tale
will give young rebels-in-the-making a taste of the power of peaceful protest
and the satisfaction of cooperative give and take. Witty watercolors by
award-winning illustrator Betsy Lewin (Snake Alley Band, Araminta's Paint Box)
will make this a favorite for one and all, even if words such as "ultimatum" and
"neutral" throw the younger set. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter --This text
refers to the Hardcover edition. From Publishers Weekly Plucky barnyard denizens
unite to improve their working conditions in this hilarious debut picture book
from Cronin (appropriately enough, an attorney). Farmer Brown is dumbfounded
when his cows discover an old typewriter in the barn and begin experimenting
("All day long he hears click, clack, moo. Click, clack, moo. Clickety clack
moo"). Things really get out of hand when the cows began airing their
grievances. Lewin (Araminta's Paint Box) conveys the fellow's shock as he reads:
"Dear Farmer Brown, The barn is very cold at night. We'd like some electric
blankets. Sincerely, The Cows." When Farmer Brown denies the cows' request, the
bovine organizers go on strike. Through the use of the man's shadow, Lewin
communicates his rage: the straw in his hat creates the appearance of his hair
on end. With help from a neutral duck mediator, the exasperated Farmer Brown
finally makes concessions. But, much to his dismay, the cows are not the only
creatures that can type. Cronin humorously turns the tables on conventional
barnyard dynamics; Lewin's bold, loose-lined watercolors set a light and
easygoing mood that matches Farmer Brown's very funny predicament. Kids and
underdogs everywhere will cheer for the clever critters that calmly and politely
stand up for their rights, while their human caretaker becomes more and more
unglued. Ages 3-7. (Feb.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This

| A Color of His Own Author: Lionni, Leo ISBN: 0-590-48279-3 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback Scholastic
Amazon.com Every animal has a color of its own. "Parrots are green, elephants
are gray, pigs are pink." But chameleons change color wherever they go. "On
lemons they are yellow. In the heather they are purple." One chameleon is not
pleased with his changeable appearance. He thinks, "If I remain on a leaf, I
shall be green forever, and so I too will have a color of my own." Of course,
what he doesn't take into account is the changes wrought by autumn, and soon the
green chameleon is yellow, then red, and then tumbled to the ground for the long
black winter night. It isn't until he befriends another older, wiser chameleon
that our hero begins to find inner peace, even as his outer surface is
transformed again and again. Leo Lionni, children's book creator extraordinaire,
author of such beloved picture books as Frederick, Alexander and the Wind-Up
Mouse, Swimmy, and Inch by Inch, all Caldecott Honor winners, introduces color
concepts in an exquisite and touching story. This small board book edition of
the classic tale of self-acceptance and friendship will be a favorite for
toddlers and parents alike. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter --This text
refers to the Board book edition. Book Description Now available in a board book
edition, the charming story of a chameleon searching for his own color, who ends
up finding a true friend. Elephants are gray. Pigs are pink. Only the chameleon
has no color of his own. He is purple like the heather, yellow like a lemon,
even black and orange striped like a tiger! Then one day a chameleon has an idea
to remain one color forever by staying on the greenest leaf he can find. But in
the autumn, the leaf changes from green to yellow to red . . . and so does the
chameleon. When another chameleon suggests they travel together, he learns that
companionship is more important than having a color of his own. No matter where
he goes with his new friend, they will always be alike. Colorful illustrations
and spare prose make this charming love story perfect for a board book edition
to introduce the heartwarming fables of Lionni to toddlers. --This text refers

Paperback Puffin
Amazon.com Have you ever dreamed of being locked in a department store at
night? The endearing story of Corduroy paints a picture of the adventures that
might unfold (for a teddy bear at least) in such a situation. When all the
shoppers have gone home for the night, Corduroy climbs down from the shelf to
look for his missing button. It's a brave new world! He accidentally gets on an
elevator that he thinks must be a mountain and sees the furniture section that
he thinks must be a palace. He tries to pull a button off the mattress, but he
ends up falling off the bed and knocking over a lamp. The night watchman hears
the crash, finds Corduroy, and puts him back on the shelf downstairs. The next
morning, he finds that it's his lucky day! A little girl buys him with money she
saved in her piggy bank and takes him home to her room. Corduroy decides that
this must be home and that Lisa must be his friend. Youngsters will never get
tired of this toy-comes-alive tale with a happy ending, so you may also want to
seek out Dan Freeman's next creation, A Pocket for Corduroy. (Ages 3 to 8)--This

| Counting on the Woods Author: Publishing, DK ISBN: 0-7894-2662-5 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback DK CHILDREN
From Publishers Weekly The lyrical text and crisp color photographs of this
beguiling counting book invite readers to look closely at the natural world. The
tone is set at the beginning, where a dynamic photograph of forest foliage
balances against a smaller inset photo of a boy setting off on a journey through
the woods: "One path,/ a stick for a staff." Readers next see two mourning doves
perched in a black walnut tree: "Two birds,/ daybreak's words." The poem's
gentle and reflective tone not only instructs readers to notice "four worms"
digging in the ground but stretches the imagination by adding, "how the earth
turns." While a few of Lyon's more elliptical or syntactically complex lines may
be a bit challenging, Olson's photographs, taken in eastern Kentucky, shed light
on their meaning and will delight nature-lovers of any age. Of further help,
unobtrusive captions identify the birds and wildflowers in each picture.
Teachers and parents seeking to help children appreciate the simple beauty to be
found on a walk through the woods will treasure this exquisite book. Ages 2-7.
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the
Hardcover edition. From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1?A short poem
illustrated with stunning full-color photographs, this counting book is a simple
lesson in ecology that reminds children of the importance of green space. It is
clear that humans and animals count on trees to be there, to "clean the air/for
everything/that breathes." Lyon's lyrical voice is concisely interpreted by lush
photographs of the Kentucky woods. Vivid greens, the trickle of the creek, the
moist woods, all come to life in these pictures. Children count bugs, flowers,
birds, and worms as they drink in the beauty of nature. Beginning readers can
manage the poem while learning about flora and fauna; species are identified in
the captions. Whole-language classrooms will find this a natural for nature and
poetry studies. Not just another counting book, this one will enrich most
collections.?Angela J. Reynolds, West Slope Community Library, Portland, OR

Paperback Gryphon House
From School Library Journal An exhaustive compilation of resources, this book
gives helpful ideas for preparing preschoolers to get ready to read. The author
discusses the debate between the systematic instruction of phonics versus the
whole-language approach, and follows a developmental sequence to achieve the
desire and skills needed for reading. Chapters cover comprehending stories,
developing oral language and following directions, understanding the functions
of print (spatial concepts, story maps, and creative writing), and acquiring
reading skills. About 100 pages are devoted to games and activities for learning
each letter of the alphabet, e.g., the letter "A" has nine pages about learning
the short and long "A." Appendixes include assessment checklists for noting
progress, patterns for flannel boards and other props, recipes, and a glossary.
No music accompanies any of the songs, and the suggested reading lists do not
include publishers or dates. Also, while the book appears to be geared toward
younger children, some of the exercises such as re-creating stories through
drama and the use of journaling are better suited to an older audience. While
not a necessary purchase, this comprehensive book will be useful for program
planning for libraries, as well as for educators. DeAnn Tabuchi, San Anselmo

the men and women who cannot sleep at night when we are worried about our
children. We are the mothers who go through the greatest pain of our lives and
immediately afterward feel nothing but pure joy and gratitude for what that pain
has brought. We are the people who would give up everything we have in exchange
for our child, who feel more love looking into those beautiful little faces than
we have ever felt, who know that there is really no such thing as quality
time--it is all quality time. It is for these wonderful people this book is
written.

| Daniel Boone: Trailblazer Author: Allen, Nancy Kelly Waites, Joan C. (Illustrator) ISBN: 1-58980-212-8 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Hardcover Pelican Publishing Company
From School Library Journal Grade 2-4–This disappointing picture-book
biography features lackluster illustrations and awkward, colloquial language.
From the first page, where readers learn that it pleasured Daniel's parents that
he was a boy, to the child who purely loved to read, to his wanderlust, which
began to fester like a boil, children will be baffled. Only the detail that he
could shoot a tick off a wildcat's nose from one hundred yards and the spread
depicting his survival tactics in the cold outdoors are at all indicative of
Boone's folk-hero stature. Also, Allen belabors the woodsman's repeated lost
land claims, depicting him as either inept or mistreated. While the author
refers to young Daniel's tracking and hunting…with his Indian friends, there is
no mention of the many battles he later led against Indians whose raids were
responsible for the deaths of his brother and two of his sons. In addition,
aside from a brief mention of the French and Indian War, there is no indication
that Boone lived through the Revolution. In fact, a vague reference to Abraham
Lincoln's family following him westward may confuse children as our 16th
president wasn't even born at the time; it was actually Lincoln's grandparents
who made the move. The watercolor illustrations are primarily full spreads
depicting the subject at different stages of his life. The people and scenes
appear static, failing to convey any sense of the excitement or adventure
associated with the subject.–Barbara Auerbach, New York City Public Schools

Americans, but few know the myriad trails he blazed that led to his fame.
Beginning with his birth in the Pennsylvania backwoods and culminating in his
final days in Missouri, "Daniel Boone: Trailblazer" demonstrates the American
legend's pioneer spirit and his constant need for more "elbow room." Although
Boone spent a lifetime leading pioneers westward to find land, he continually
lost his own to land speculators. This lively picture book offers young readers
a simple, chronological glimpse of his gains and losses, adventures, and roles
as farmer, hunter, surveyor, statesman, husband, father, and grandfather. Boone
emerges as a heroic figure, successful and beloved despite his setbacks. Always
on the go, Boone's persistence and frontier fortitude make this a riveting read
for all ages. Illustrations by Joan C. Waites capture the spirit of the intrepid
explorer and depict the American wilderness as it once was.

| The Day the Goose Got Loose (A Puffin Pied Piper) Author: Lindbergh, Reeve Kellogg, Steven (Illustrator) ISBN: 0-14-055337-1 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback Puffin Books
From Publishers Weekly What happens when the goose gets loose? She manages to
throw the entire barnyard into chaos, and young readers will be tickled by the
goings-on. After breaking out of her pen, the audacious creature eats the hens'
grain; scares the sheep silly; causes the ram to butt a fussy-looking child,
whose "dress got messed and her hair un-styled"; sets free the horses, who storm
the house; and provokes a bull named Spence to charge through the pasture fence.
Lindbergh's rollicking rhymed verse charts the goose's destructive course, as
Kellogg shows feathers and flowerpots flying, trashcans tumbling and wild-eyed
people and animals scurrying in every direction. The goose calms down, finally,
after the police arrive to set things right, and before long an explanation for
her antics surfaces. The book closes with a soothing, exquisitely illustrated
dream sequence that offsets the frenzy of the rest of the tale, and demonstrates
Kellogg's remarkable versatility. Ages 4-8. Copyright 1990 Reed Business
Information, Inc.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of
this title. From School Library Journal When the goose gets loose, the farm is
in comical chaos. Each animal and person reacts in its own way, but only the
younger brother knows why the goose got loose--because he saw the wild geese
flying overhead. At night the boy dreams a wonderful dream about geese--tame and
wild--with castles and wizards and other magical things. Like Lindbergh's The
Midnight Farm (Dial, 1987), the satisfying rhyme and rhythm of this book make it
a good choice for reading aloud. Both the story and illustrations are
reminiscent of The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash (Dial, 1980), in which Noble's
text and Kellogg's illustrations show the havoc caused by a pet snake let loose
on a farm. The illustrations are typically Kellogg, rendered in pen and pencil
with watercolor washes. The pages overflow with funny dramatic action. They are
rich in detail and imagination, from the glowing orange panorama of the farm at
dawn to the soft blue of the dream world at night. --Anne Price, Ann Mersereau

| Delivered from Distraction: Getting the Most out of Life with
Attention Deficit Disorder Author: Hallowell, Edward M. Ratey, John J. Md ISBN: 0-345-44231-8 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback Ballantine Books
Medication? Maybe. Marry the right person and find the right job? A must if
you are an adult suffering from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). So say
psychiatrists Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey, authors of the influential
Driven to Distraction, published in 1994. In their new book, Delivered from
Distraction, Hallowell and Ratey survey the current medical landscape concerning
ADD, combining their own clinical observations with the latest research to paint
a much more complex and, in many ways, positive picture of the condition than
has generally been presented. Hallowell and Ratey embrace the idea that success
in life comes more from playing to your strengths than overcoming your
weaknesses. In the case of a person with ADD (child or adult), these strengths
often include unusually high levels of creativity, charisma, intelligence, and
energy. This follow-up to the authors' 1994 manual, Driven to Distraction, has
the advantage of personal testimony regarding adult Attention Deficit Disorder
(ADD)--the authors themselves have ADD--as well a very readable presentation of
the latest research in the field. Defining ADD as a collection of traits, some
positive, some negative, the authors intend to encourage those who have this
condition or are raising children with it and advise on how to maximize their
abilities and minimize characteristics, such as procrastination, that may hinder
them at school or work. In a comprehensive overview, Hallowell and Ratey provide
a new screening questionnaire for adults and list methods that physicians,
parents and educators can use to diagnose and treat the ADD child. Of primary
importance to readers are the recommended steps for living a satisfying life
with ADD; these include developing personal relationships and engaging in
creative activities that will foster self-esteem. The authors also separate
nutrition fads from what is known about how diet can affect brain functioning
and discuss whether to take medication. Overall, this is an excellent resource.

| The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All
Learners Author: Tomlinson, Carol Ann ISBN: 0-87120-342-1 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback Association for Supervision & Curriculum Deve
Book Description It's an age-old challenge: How can teachers divide their
time, resources, and efforts to effectively instruct students of diverse
backgrounds and interests, as well as skill and readiness levels? The
Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners offers a
powerful, practical solution. Drawing on nearly three decades of experience,
author Carol Ann Tomlinson describes a way of thinking about teaching and
learning that will change all aspects of how you approach students and your
classroom. She looks to the latest research on learning, education, and change
for the theoretical basis of differentiated instruction and why it's so
important to today's children. Yet she offers much more than theory, filling the
pages with real-life examples of teachers and students using-and benefitting
from-differentiated instruction. At the core of the book, three chapters
describe actual lessons, units, and classrooms with differentiated instruction
in action. Tomlinson looks at elementary and secondary classrooms in nearly all
subject areas to show how real teachers turn the challenge of differentiation
into a reality. Her insightful analysis of how, what, and why teachers
differentiate lays the groundwork for you to bring differentiation to your own
classroom. Tomlinson's commonsense, classroom-tested advice speaks to
experienced and novice teachers as well as educational leaders who want to
foster differentiation in their schools. Using a "think versus sink approach,"
Tomlinson guides all readers through small changes, then even larger ones, until
differentiation becomes a way of life that enriches both teachers and students.

| Dumpling Soup Author: Rattigan, Jama Kim Hsu-Flanders, Lillian (Illustrator) ISBN: 0-316-73445-4 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
School & Library Binding Little Brown & Co
From Publishers Weekly Winner of the first New Voices, New World
Multicultural Fiction Contest in 1990, this story of a Hawaiian girl's New
Year's Eve is as warm and comforting as homemade soup. Marisa narrates this
slice of Korean-Chinese-Japanese-Hawaiian-Anglo life, describing her close-knit
family's New Year's Eve traditions. She describes the food, the games, the
fireworks and the evening's climax, a midnight feast of dumpling soup in which
float Marisa's lumpy but lovingly praised first attempts at making dumplings.
With her savory prose, Rattigan cooks up a world replete with love and respect
for one's family and heritage. Nuggets of pithy dialogue convey the essence of
family members: " 'Too much gossip!' says Grandma in Korean. 'Mince that
cabbage! More bean sprouts!' " Hsu-Flanders's watercolors are stuffed with
delicate details and are as appetizing as Marisa's ingenuous tone--and her
dumplings. Ages 4-8. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School
Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 3-A large, loving Hawaiian family gathers to
celebrate the new year with Marisa making mandoo, or dumplings, a traditional
holiday feast. Told from the seven-year-old child's breathless point of view,
the event is also a tribute to diversity. The Yang family, like much of the
population of Hawaii, includes members of Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Hawaiian,
and haole (white) descent. And everyone loves mandoo, especially the
funny-looking ones that Marisa makes. Though the text is low-key, the characters
and their affection for one another are infectious. Cluttered, lively,
full-color illustrations in a style reminiscent of Marylin Hafner's work are
packed with detail and children. Domestic groupings of all sorts will keep young
eyes busy trying to identify which cousin is which. The pages are so full of
activity that they often bleed entirely off the page. Any child who loves family
gatherings will identify with this book, and teachers will welcome it for its
inclusive approach. Though lengthy to read to a young group, the story will be
relished by older primary-aged children for reading aloud and by independent
readers, too. Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MA
